Spiritual Goals For Christ's Disciples

Jan 4, 2026    Pastor Steve Kerns

Paul's letter to the small church in Colossae provides a powerful framework for spiritual growth that transcends typical New Year resolutions. Writing to believers in an insignificant, dying city, Paul addresses saints who are pure, consecrated, and set apart for God through faith in Christ. These faithful brethren hold fast to truth despite cultural pressures and false doctrines threatening their community. The foundation of Christian living rests on three essential virtues: faith specifically in Jesus Christ (not just belief in general), love for all saints as evidence of genuine faith, and hope in our eternal inheritance. From this foundation, Paul presents four spiritual goals that should characterize every believer's life. First, we must be filled with the knowledge of God's will through Scripture and prayer, allowing it to control our lives rather than merely inform us. Second, we should walk worthy of the Lord by conducting ourselves to please Him, bearing fruit in good works, and increasing in knowledge of God's character. Third, we need God's strength for patience, long-suffering, and joy - supernatural responses that demonstrate divine power working through us. Finally, we must cultivate consistent gratitude to the Father who has qualified us for our heavenly inheritance. These spiritual objectives keep believers anchored in truth, protected from deception, and growing in Christlikeness throughout the year.
