Advent part 1, Proper Responses To The Birth of Jesus

Dec 14, 2025    Pastor Steve Kerns

We often approach Christmas with a mix of distraction, anxiety, or the spiritual arrogance of thinking, "I already know this story." Yet, the message of the Incarnation is living and powerful, demanding more than a passive nod to tradition. To truly take ownership of this Advent season, we must recover a deep sense of awe for the miraculous. From the physical miracle of the virgin birth to the spiritual miracle of a submitted heart, Luke’s Gospel challenges us to stop viewing the world through cynical, natural eyes. We must believe that the God who intervened in history is the same wonder-working God active in us today, proving that "nothing is impossible" for those who believe.

Our awe must lead to active rejoicing in why He came. Jesus arrived not just to be celebrated, but to defeat our enemies—sin, death, and fear—and to give light to those sitting in darkness. As Zacharias prophesied, we have been delivered from the hand of our enemies so that we might serve Him without fear in holiness and righteousness. This season, do not let the world's noise drown out the Savior's victory. Challenge yourself to move beyond the superficial "icing" of the holidays and feast on the truth: because He came, you are redeemed, the darkness is conquered, and you have every reason to rejoice.
